Clay began his career in oil and gas in 2004 as an in-field operator engaged in various aspect of upstream development in conventional and unconventional oil and gas plays.  After several years of operational experience, Clay broadened his knowledge-base by starting a career doing land work in the Barnett Shale in Dallas/Fort Worth to negotiate large-scale lease agreements.  Shortly after, Clay fused his knowledge of in-field operations and land work while managing a team of landmen and helping close the gap between the courthouse and infield operations for Dale Property Services.  In March of 2008, Clay was tasked with organizing all Public/Government Relation activities on behalf of Twin Cities Development, exclusive land broker for Chesapeake Energy in various parts of the Haynesville Shale, where he oversaw the development of public affairs, group negotiations and assisted in several lobbying efforts.

Prior to joining the Buffco team, Clay has been actively constructing small deals as an independent landman and has worked in a multitude of oil and gas plays in several different states. Clay has served on several nonprofit boards such as the Northwest Louisiana Red Cross, Caddo Council on Aging, President of Kingdom Life Academy and Clay currently serves as Chairman for the Haynesville Shale Bass Tournament benefiting the Shriners Hospitals for Children. He also serves as a board member for the Texas Natural Gas Vehicle Alliance.
